2020 Thaw Residency (the last astronomical twilight)

The last of the winter snows signal a change. The ice breaks up in the fjord, the waterfalls are flowing, and the night (absolute dark) is replaced by astronomical twilight (when the Sun is between 12 degrees and 18 degrees below the horizon). The days start out at 16 hours long and quickly move to 19 hours before your residency ends. You will have plenty of light to work. Bright and cool.

2020 The Night Fades Residency

Patches of snow in the mountains along the fjord will begin to vanish.  Your daylight begins at about 20 hours long and reaches 22 hours before your stay at Brekka comes to an end.  The grass grows longer, from brown to green, the sheep are released into the fjord with their lambs.

2020 Midnight Sun Residency

Your stay in the fjord comes as the lambs are growing up in the fields with their mothers.  The days start out at 22 hours long and you will see the longest day and celebrate solstice, a magical time in Gilsfjordur. Also Iceland celebrates Independence Day on June 17th.

2020 Sheep Gathering Residency (and aurora return)

Every September, Icelandic farmers embark on the annual tradition of scaling mountains to collect their sheep before the long and dark winter sets in. The sheep roundup, called réttir, is one of the most important events in Iceland's countryside. As the sunset arrives at 10pm, astronomical twilight reenters the fjord. The days are draw in to 14 hours of light, the grass has turned golden. You are welcome to witness to réttir and maybe even join if it you wish.

Patches of winter snow in the mountains along the fjord will begin to vanish.  Your days begin about 20 hours long and reach 22 hours before your stay at Brekka comes to an end.  The grass grow longer, the sheep appear in the fjord with their lambs after a winter in the sheep sheds.
